Arcsecond V6 is live! (Sorry for the late annoucement…)

The news

The main change of V6 is the whole new & highly customizable design and organisation, around “apps” and a sidebar! Read our dedicated post.

The main new features & changes of the Night Explorer:

  • New annual curves in the Night Explorer: “Max Altitude” and “Night Length” (read our dedicated post).
  • A grid mode for the Night Explorer! (read our dedicated post).
  • The filtering of the Nodes Tree! (read our dedicated post).

The Control Room

Most of the progresses of the last months were focused on the new app “Control Room”, which aims at allowing data acquisition, directly from Arcsecond. It is not available in the cloud, but here are some (local development) screenshots. It is been now regularly tested in our local installation in Tasmania (Greenhill Observatory), and Canada (Montréal Planétarium).

A dedicated view for full control & setup of each device.
The Observer Console is an optimized view for acquiring data manually.
The work-in-progress Night Scheduler, to automate your observing nights!

The Big Split

We’ve talked to many different astronomers, in various places. And we came to an important conclusion. Despite similar tools and needs, amateurs (astro-photographers) and professionals definitely have different approaches.

This may sound a bit silly, but we believed for a long time that our work with Arcsecond could reunite them. As a former professional, I needed to listen and learn from “amateurs” to better understand them.

That’s why we split Arcsecond in two!

Or more precisely, we’ll keep Arcsecond focused on advanced tools for professionals and power users (whoever they are), focusing on obtaining data (that’s why some V5 tools have become invisible in Arcsecond V6). And we prepare a whole new site dedicated to astro-photographers!

It’s called SkyImages.io.
